Cat Feeding Safety

Nothing on this site is veterinary advice. Sudden changes in appetite, weight, thirst or litter box habits can signal kidney disease, diabetes, thyroid problems or a blockage, so call your veterinarian before you assume a new bowl or supplement will fix it. A male cat straining in the litter box with little or no urine is an emergency.

Change foods gradually over 7 to 10 days to avoid stomach upset, and never let a cat go without eating for more than a day or two, because cats can develop a serious liver condition called hepatic lipidosis. Automatic feeders can jam or lose power, so check that food actually dropped, keep backup batteries in place, and do not rely on one for trips longer than your cat can safely be alone.

Clean water fountains on the schedule the maker gives, replace filters, and check pumps and cords for chewing damage. Wash bowls daily. Give supplements only at the labeled dose for your cat's weight, keep them out of reach, and never give a cat human medications, onions, garlic, grapes, chocolate, xylitol or lilies.
